16 Stores That Give Seniors 40% Off (But Hide It at Checkout)

You can walk into a store, buy the same item as the shopper ahead of you, and still pay more simply because you came on the wrong day or never asked about the senior discount.

That is what makes these offers frustrating. Some start at age 55. Others wait until 60 or 65. A few work every day, while others appear on one Tuesday or Wednesday each month.

There is one thing to clear up before you start making a shopping calendar. Most stores on this list do not hand every senior 40% off. Current senior offers usually range from 5% to 30%. Goodwill of Southern Nevada is a rare verified example that advertises 40% off for shoppers 55 and older on Wednesdays.

First, What Does “40% Off” Really Mean?

Source: Canva

A big percentage makes a great headline, but the checkout math needs to be accurate. AARP’s current senior shopping guides show that many grocery discounts are closer to 5% or 10%, while retailers such as Savers go higher at 30%.

Goodwill of Southern Nevada is different. Its current promotions page says shoppers age 55 and older receive 20% off on normal days and 40% off on Wednesdays. Red and yellow tag restrictions apply.

You also cannot assume every coupon stacks.

Kohl’s specifically says its Wednesday senior offer cannot be combined with another percentage coupon. Walgreens places restrictions on promotional code combinations as well.

So the smart question is not, “Can I get 40% everywhere?”

It is, “What is the best verified discount this store will give me today?”

Policies can change and regional participation matters. Check your local store before driving across town only for a discount.

1. Goodwill Can Give Seniors Some of the Biggest Discounts

Goodwill

Goodwill is difficult to describe with one national number because regional Goodwill organizations set many of their own promotions. That can actually work in your favor if you live in the right area.

Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake currently gives shoppers 55 and older 30% off on Wednesdays with valid ID. The offer excludes certain new goods and cannot be combined with some other promotions.

Southern Nevada goes further. Its Goodwill stores advertise 20% senior savings on regular days and 40% on Wednesdays for shoppers 55 and older. Certain colored tags are excluded.

That is the clearest verified 40% senior offer on this list.

Your move is simple. Search for your regional Goodwill website rather than assuming the national rules apply. If you cannot find the answer online, call the store and ask which day carries its senior discount.

2. Savers Gives Shoppers 55 Plus 30% on Tuesday

Savers

Savers is one of the strongest straightforward discounts on the list. AARP’s current guide says customers age 55 and older can get 30% off purchases every Tuesday.

New merchandise is excluded, and local restrictions may apply. That still makes Tuesday worth remembering if you regularly buy secondhand clothing, books, small furniture or household items.

A discount this large can tempt you to buy things simply because they feel cheap. Do not let that erase the savings.

Go in with a short list. A $20 item you never needed is still $14 spent after a 30% discount.

3. Walgreens Has a 20% Monthly Seniors Day

Walgreens

Walgreens runs one of the better national senior programs.

The company says shoppers age 55 and older can receive 20% off eligible regular priced merchandise on the first Tuesday of each month during Seniors Day.

The offer works best when you plan purchases that normally stay near full price. Think basic household goods, beauty items and eligible health products rather than merchandise already carrying a deep sale price.

There are exclusions. Walgreens’ current terms exclude several categories and place limits on combining promotional codes.

That means the old advice to throw every coupon, reward and senior discount at the same product does not always work.

Check your myWalgreens account before paying and confirm that the discount appears before the transaction is finished.

4. Kohl’s Gives Seniors 15% on Wednesday, With One Big Catch

Kohl’s

If you are 60 or older, Wednesday is the day to remember at Kohl’s.

Kohl’s says qualifying shoppers receive 15% off eligible in store purchases every Wednesday. You should bring identification that confirms your age.

Here is the catch many discount lists get wrong: you cannot combine the senior offer with another percentage off coupon.

Kohl’s says dollar based discounts such as Kohl’s Cash are applied before its percentage coupon. The senior discount also excludes Sephora at Kohl’s, gift cards and other coupon restricted merchandise.

So do the math instead of assuming Wednesday always wins. A separate 25% coupon may beat the 15% senior offer on an eligible purchase.

5. Michaels Gives Seniors 10% Every Day

Michaels is easier to use because you are not locked into one weekday.

Its current U.S. policy gives shoppers age 55 and older an additional 10% off eligible purchases, including eligible sale merchandise. The discount can be linked to a Michaels Rewards account for automatic use in stores and online.

If you have not linked your age status, you can show valid ID for an in store transaction.

There are plenty of exclusions. Clearance merchandise, gift cards, certain machines, custom framing and selected brands or services may not qualify.

For regular craft shoppers, the biggest advantage is convenience. You do not have to rearrange your week just to receive the senior price.

6. Ross Gives 55 Plus Shoppers 10% Every Tuesday

Ross

Ross has one of the clearest policies on this list.

Its official FAQ says customers age 55 and older receive 10% off purchases made on Tuesday. You have to tell the associate that you qualify, and the store may request ID.

That last detail matters because this is exactly the kind of senior discount that can disappear from your transaction if you say nothing.

Ross already operates as an off price retailer, so the additional 10% can be useful on clothing, home accessories and other purchases you planned to make anyway.

Tell the cashier before payment. Checking the receipt afterward is much more annoying than asking before the transaction closes.

7. PetSmart Cuts Grooming Costs 10% on Tuesdays

PetSmart

PetSmart’s senior discount is narrower than many lists make it sound.

Its current grooming offer gives 10% off grooming services on Tuesdays for seniors age 65 and older. Valid identification may be required, and merchandise is excluded.

That means you should not expect 10% off dog food, toys, beds or other products simply because you shop on Tuesday.

The offer matters most if your pet needs regular professional grooming. Moving an appointment from Wednesday to Tuesday may cut the cost without changing the service you receive.

Ask the salon when you book. PetSmart notes that offer details and participation can have conditions.

8. Clarks Has a Senior Offer, but It Works Differently

Older online lists often describe a broad Clarks store discount for shoppers age 62 and older. Current information points to a different setup.

AARP’s updated guide says shoppers 56 and older can receive 10% off eligible full price online orders after age verification. The current offer is described as an online benefit rather than a general in store senior day.

That distinction matters if you planned to walk into a Clarks store and expect the cashier to remove 10%.

Check the current online terms before ordering. If you prefer shopping in person, ask the location whether it has any local age based offer rather than assuming the online deal carries over.

9. Fred Meyer Gives 10% on the First Tuesday

Fred Meyer

Fred Meyer gives shoppers age 55 and older an additional 10% off select merchandise on the first Tuesday of each month.

The official policy includes private brand groceries, apparel, shoes, accessories, home merchandise and most electronics. It can also work on eligible pickup or delivery orders placed on that day.

The words “select merchandise” matter.

Non private brand food, pharmacy purchases, certain health and beauty products, gift cards, fuel and several other categories are excluded.

If you already need home goods, clothing and Kroger family private label products, save those purchases for the first Tuesday. There is little benefit in moving excluded purchases to that date.

10. Fry’s Food Stores Gives Arizona Seniors 10%

Fry’s Food

Arizona shoppers have another useful calendar date.

AARP’s March 2026 grocery guide reports that Fry’s Food Stores gives shoppers 55 and older 10% off most eligible purchases on the first Wednesday of each month.

This can be more valuable than a clothing discount because groceries are repeat purchases. You are buying food whether a senior day exists or not.

Do not use the discount as an excuse to double the amount in your cart. Instead, move shelf stable items and household basics you already planned to purchase onto the first Wednesday.

Since grocery promotions can change by division, check your Fry’s account or current local ad before making a large monthly trip.

11. Bashas’ Gives 10% on the First Wednesday

Bashas'

Bashas’ also rewards Arizona shoppers who plan around the calendar.

AARP’s 2026 guide says customers age 55 and older can receive 10% off on the first Wednesday of the month when they use the required Thank You rewards card.

Several categories do not qualify, including prescriptions, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, fuel and other regulated or service purchases.

If Bashas’ is your regular supermarket, this is a good date for pantry basics, cleaning supplies and other eligible items that you would otherwise buy later in the month.

Sign into your rewards account before your first planned senior day so a missing membership does not become a surprise at checkout.

12. New Seasons Market Gives 65 Plus Shoppers 10%

New Seasons Market serves a much smaller region than national chains, but its senior day is worth knowing if you live nearby.

AARP’s current 2026 grocery guide says shoppers 65 and older receive 10% off most items on Wednesdays. The chain has stores concentrated around Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington.

Ten percent can become meaningful when it applies to a normal grocery trip rather than an occasional discretionary purchase.

Plan around food you would have bought anyway. Buying an extra $50 of specialty groceries just because they are discounted does not reduce your monthly spending.

Local terms can change, so confirm eligibility and exclusions with the store before your first Wednesday trip.

13. Food Bazaar Offers 10% During Weekday Hours

Food Bazaar uses a time window instead of limiting senior savings to one weekday.

AARP’s 2026 supermarket guide says participating senior shoppers can receive 10% off Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Age rules can vary, and products already featured in the weekly circular are excluded from the senior discount.

That restriction changes how you should shop.

If the weekly sale is already better than the senior discount, buy the sale. Use the age based offer on qualifying items that are not already part of the circular.

The advantage is flexibility. You have several weekdays rather than one short monthly window.

14. Harris Teeter Club 60 Saves 5% Every Thursday

Harris Teeter

Harris Teeter is another place where older discount lists can mislead shoppers.

The company’s current Club 60 page says customers 60 and older receive 5% off every Thursday when they use a VIC card. The discount is applied after other coupons and VIC savings have been deducted.

The discount does not apply to fuel, pharmacy purchases, tickets or gift cards.

Five percent sounds small beside a 30% thrift discount, but grocery math works differently. Food is purchased week after week.

A qualifying $120 grocery basket would save $6. Repeat that regularly and the discount starts doing useful work without requiring you to buy anything extra.

15. Brookshire’s Gives Seniors 5% Twice a Week

Brookshire’s gives older shoppers two chances each week instead of one.

Its official savings page says customers 60 and older receive 5% off grocery purchases every Tuesday and Thursday when they use a valid Thank You Card.

Fuel, alcohol, tobacco, prescriptions, gift cards and several services are excluded. Louisiana stores also have an exclusion involving milk and dairy purchases.

The twice weekly schedule is useful if you buy fresh food more often and do not want to force your entire grocery run into one day.

Add your Thank You Card to the phone number you normally use at checkout. Then ask about the senior discount before paying.

16. Weis Markets Gives 60 Plus Shoppers 10%

Weis Markets has a useful Tuesday offer, but it does not cover every product in your cart.

AARP’s updated 2026 guide says shoppers 60 and older receive 10% off participating Weis branded products every Tuesday.

That makes private label staples the products to focus on.

If you already buy Weis brand canned food, pantry goods, household products or other qualifying private label items, Tuesday can be the logical day to restock.

Do not assume a national brand sitting next to the Weis product receives the same discount. Watch the register and ask the cashier which products qualify if the final amount looks wrong.

Which Discounts Really Let You Save the Most?

The percentage alone does not tell the whole story.

A 30% thrift discount on a $20 purchase saves $6. A recurring 5% grocery discount on a $150 weekly basket saves $7.50 each qualifying trip.

The best senior discount is usually the one attached to something you already planned to buy.
